Nowadays were surrounded by an abundance of learning resources playing on different language theories and known learning styles.Thats why its important to look at the process of learning itself, so you can more easily find and/or develop a method that works for you.A Brief Overview of Language Development TheoriesThe most promin ent figure in language development is Noam Chomsky, whos been studying this ever since his days at MIT. Then there are those who have offered their take on language development from a psychological perspective. This includes psychologists such as B.F Skinner, Jean Piaget and Vygotsky.Well be giving you a brief overview of their theories and perspectives. Fair warning to all: Theres a lot of psychology here, so be prepared for a bunch of fancy new terms (well explain them briefly as we go, of course).Chomskys TheoriesNoam Chomsky has been studying and developing his theories since the 1950s. In his book  Aspects of the Theory of Syntax published in 1965, he has pushed forward the fundamental observation that there are deep structures and surface structures in every sentence, no matter what language. This is the reason why you can form sentences with similar meaning using a theoretically infinite combination of words.Essentially, deep structures are the thoughts and meanings we want t o express and surface structures are the words, sounds and symbols we use to try and express them.Lets look at some examples. Take a look at the following sentence:Language development seems really complicated to me. I think language development is really complicated.Both express exactly the same thing using different words and a different word order. The deep structure is the same (the notion that language development is obviously not the simplest thing in the world), though the words used (surface structure) are different.The use of these words and their structures are refined over the course of time. It changes and evolves on the surface, but the deeper structures remain. This is a part of Chomskys transformational-generative grammar theory.Another important contribution Chomsky made to linguistic studies is the theory of universal grammar. He asserted that the human brain contains a mechanism for language acquisition, meaning that our languages share the same deeper structures d espite the largely superficial surface structures.This is why its possible for anyone to learn a foreign language, regardless of the complexity of its grammatical structure or script.B.F Skinners Behaviorist PerspectiveTackling the issue of language from a different perspective was B.F Skinner, the behavioral psychologist. Simply put, the behavioral perspective postulates that everything we do is dictated by our environment and that our behavior is a response to external stimuli through operant conditioning, the process through which behavior changes with positive and negative reinforcement.B.F Skinner theorized that language acquisition  is dictated by our environment and the positive or negative reinforcement we receive from it. Parents, for example, enforce correct usage of a word in children with positive facial or verbal reactions. They play larger roles in our verbal behavior,  a concept Skinner describes in his book. Verbal behavior introduces the concept of functions to word s, as well as meanings.For example, a child may know what to call a toilet, but they must also learn what the use of that word will allow them to acquire or express. Theyve heard their parents say this word, but what happens when they say it? Most likely, their parents take them to it.So in this case, the most basic function of the word is to express a need to use the bathroom. A pretty important thing to be able to express, wouldnt you say?Piagets Cognitive Development TheoryJean Piaget was another prominent psychologist who offered yet another take on language acquisition and development. His focus was on child development and the stages children go through to develop and learn.He asserted that children would only be able to fully grasp some concepts within specific  developmental stages, due to the fact that certain sections of the brain would only further develop at certain ages.For example, since the sensorimotor area develops first during the first two years of a childs life, children focus on their immediate surroundings, experimenting with the things around them by playing with them, biting them or throwing them.Throughout this stage, theyll take things apart, put things back together and explore the concept of things existing in and out of sight. By the end of it all, theyll be able to visualize things that arent there in front of them, which is arguably the most crucial part of this stage when it comes to language and communication.Next comes the preoperational stage in which children are able to develop their imagination and think in slightly more abstract ways. They begin to toy with symbols. Theyll use words in ways that arent generally accepted or understood. For example, they may use the word pillow to mean cloth purely because of the few shared characteristics between the two objects.They do this for egocentric communication. Anyone whos ever tried to communicate with a two-year-old will know that they arent all that interested in other perspec tives. Theyre too busy trying to explore their own mind, so dont take it personally.You may have noticed already that these concepts focus less on language and more on cognitive development during childhood and youd be right. That being said, its still important to know because Piaget did establish that language plays a huge role in cognitive development, chiefly in the way children use language throughout each stage.During the sensorimotor stage, children experiment with sounds, and language is mostly about the auditory aspects. They dont care about the meaning, they just like to create sounds. During the pre-operational stage, children use language to express themselves, but they cant really distinguish conversation from pure expression.During the concrete operational stage, children state facts and observations. Finally, during the formal operational stage, children are able to use language to express, discuss and debate abstract concepts.Vygotskys Constructivist Learning TheoryN ot completely unrelated was Vygotskys theory of social development. Its referred to as the constructivist perspective  and describes the concept of development through construction of thought and meaning.  To understand it completely, you first have to understand his perspective.It challenges the more widely-held concept of knowledge and proposes that knowledge is a construction of meaning unique to the individual. How a person grew up (their culture) will affect how they think.  He emphasizes the importance of others in our development (i.e., social interaction and guided learning).Vygotsky postulated that language develops similarly, but focused on the development of social speech, private speech and inner speech.Social speech is the language we use with others while private speech (talking to ourselves) is not meant to communicate with others (this happens around the age of three). Inner speech only really begins to appear around the age of six or seven with private speech being internalized.Its a complex idea that goes beyond the scope of this post, but children at this stage begin to internalize language and meaning and, as Vygotsky says, begin thinking in pure meaning.Suffice it to say that our relationship with language becomes increasingly more sophisticated and goes beyond the meaning of the words and into the feelings or ideas the words elicit.What These Language Development Theories Mean for YouTo be honest, weve only scratched the surface of these theories. Read on for her thoughts on Purdue University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Angela:Purdue University is in the town of West Lafayette, Indiana, which is a medium-sized, friendly, welcoming, and smart town. I was able to walk everywhere I needed to go. Everything on campus is very accessible and easy to get to. The only time I needed a car was when I would go home over breaks. The bus system on campus is amazing; there are buses that go everywhere you would need to go. And the best part? The buses are always free to students, whether you are on campus or going into West Lafayette/Lafayette. The town also has a lot of bike paths, so if you want to go biking, you do not have to bike on the main roads. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Angela:I found that the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants were very accessible. About halfway through my freshman year, I started working with one of my Spanish professors on a community outreach tutoring program and research program. I was able to stay with that program for all four years of college. I was surprised that my professors would let freshman help them with their research, but at Purdue University, the professors want their students to get as many research, internship, teaching, and learning opportunities as possible. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Angela:The majority of the students at Purdue University live in residence halls during their first two years on campus. That is what I did, and I loved it. The residence halls were a great place to meet new friends, form study groups, and meet people who were all going through the same general experiences. As a freshman, you will live on a floor with other freshmentherefore, you can all be excited, nervous, and hopeful about this new college experience together. There are four main dining courts for all the residence halls, and they are all-you-care-to-eat buffet style. I can honestly say the food in the dining courts was one of the things I missed the most when I moved out of the residence halls. Purdue University also has over 1,000 clubs and organizations, so there is something for everyone. The hardest part is working up the courage to go to the meetings. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Angela:Purdue University is mostly known for its Engineering major, and most people do not even realize that Purdue University has many other programs that are just as nationally recognized. I chose to study Education while at Purdue University. I chose to major in Education because Purdue University has a very well regarded program, and it lets students get real classroom and teaching experience from their first semester of freshman year on. My particular area of study, Spanish Education, was small, with less than 15 students in my major. This allowed us to get more experience and more contact with our professors. I was able to establish really great relationships with a lot of my professors because my class sizes were so small, and I know these professors will be my colleagues and mentors for a very long time. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Angela:This was one of my biggest concerns before going to college, and I think it is a big concern for many incoming freshmen. I came from a fairly small town and high school, and I had been friends with the same people since kindergarten. I was happily surprised, however, to realize how welcoming and inviting everyone at Purdue University was. I also highly recommend getting involved in an activity or two. I chose the choirs at Purdue University. After getting involved with the choirs, I quickly became involved in other organizations, and I made fast but life-long friends. Greek life does not play a very significant role on campusonly about 18%, or almost one fifth, of the university is involved in Greek life. There are definitely social opportunities for everyone on campus. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Angela:The university has a great Career Center that hosts many career fairs. These career fairs are for everyone, not just seniors who are looking for full-time jobs. I know many people who have gotten summer internships from these career fairs, even for the summer after freshman year. The Career Center is also available to all Purdue University alumni anytime they need it. Because Purdue University has so many renowned programs, many companies and employers come to campus solely to recruit Purdue University students. They know that the university produces high-caliber graduates who will do very well in the workforce. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Angela:Purdue University has multiple libraries on campus, and each library is subject-specific. This way, each college has its own reference center. The libraries all have common study areas, individual study areas, and quiet study areas, so there is a space for everyone. Purdue University also has a student union, which was my favorite place to do homework in. The union is not as quiet, but it has lots of study tables for students to meet with each other and study, or to do group projects. All throughout campus, different buildings have study rooms too, and there are computer labs in nearly every building on campus. There is definitely enough room for everyone to find their own little study niche. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Angela:The towns of West Lafayette and Lafayette are very welcoming toward Purdue University students. There are a lot of things to do throughout the towns. For example, Lafayette has a really cool downtown with lots of shops and restaurants. West Lafayette is also only an hour drive from Indianapolis, which is the capital of Indiana. A lot of students choose to go to Indianapolis for the day to go see a show, go shopping, explore the downtown area, or go to one of the many city festivals. Another fun thing to do is to take the train to Chicago, which leaves every morning. Although West Lafayette is a small-to-medium sized town, there is still a lot to do and lots of easy ways to get to bigger cities. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Angela:There are about 40,000 people overall at the university, with about 30,000 undergraduate students. This was a bit daunting for me, because I graduated from high school with about 115 students in my class. However, I was surprised at how small the university felt. I was able to walk from one end of the campus to the other in 10 minutes, although my classes were usually held in the Education buildings, which were right next to each other. I only ever had one large lecture throughout my time at Purdue University, and my average class sizes were around 20 people. However, my smallest class was four people. I love that I was able to get small class sizes, but still be at a bigger university with all the opportunities that it offered. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Angela: My most memorable experience with a professor occurred during my freshman year at Purdue University. During the second month of classes, a professor came to talk to my Spanish 201 class. She was discussing a tutoring and research opportunity that she was offering to all students. She was looking for students to help her with her community outreach tutoring program, while also helping her research other topics. I jumped at the chance to do this, because I was profoundly interested in how people learn a second language. I continued with this program for all four years of school, and I know it is something that has helped me immenselywith school, with research, and with helping me decide on a career. The more, the better! She graduated from Duke University in 2006 with a Bachelors degree in Literature and Cultural Theory. See what she had to say about her experience at Duke University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Anna: Duke University is divided into three sections: East Campus, West Campus, and Central Campus. A number of restaurants and shops are within walking distance of East Campus, and an easy-to-use bus line connects the three campuses. West Campus feels a bit more rural, and it is surrounded by Duke Forest. Many students have cars, but they are not necessary. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Anna: Professors are always happy to meet with students during office hours, and by my junior year, I was meeting with my major adviser frequently. Teaching assistants are friendly and available to answer questions. As a freshman, you are set up with an academic adviser who helps you choose courses and plan for the kind of experience you want to get out of your four years. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Anna: Students are required to live on campus for three years, and fraternities are housed in the dorms, as well, so the student body feels very concentrated on the campus. Juniors and seniors can live in small apartments on Central Campus. Dining options abound, with two large dining halls, a number of on-campus restaurants, and delivery options that accept payment through your DukeCard. In my experience, official social activities were rarely coordinated through dorm life, but many of my closest friends lived in my freshman hall. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Anna: Duke University has a number of very strong programs, including environmental science, biological anthropology, religion, and English. I majored in literature and cultural theory, which is distinct from the English major at Duke University, and focuses on popular culture, film, and theories of literature. The major was small when I was there, but it is very strong with a sizable faculty, so I felt well supported. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Anna: I initially made friends through dorm life and classes. Duke University also has optional programs for freshmen right before classes begin, and I would recommend participating in one as a way to make friends early on. About 30% of the men are in fraternities, and about 40% of the women join sororities. Sororities at Duke University are non-residential, but fraternities are housed on campus. Greek life is a large part of the social scene, but it is not the only part. Rush does not begin until spring semester, so freshmen have a chance to make friends before rush kicks off. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Anna: Many large companies recruit at Duke University, particularly investment banks and consulting firms. I visited the career center a few times, but I found my adviser and other academic mentors to be my most useful resources. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Anna: There are multiple large libraries on campus, and the Gothic Reading Room is a beautiful, silent place to study. You will get shushed for shuffling papers too loudly! There is also a large atrium with a caf on West Campus, and the student union is a good place to study if you need a bit of background noise. I always liked to go off-campus to a coffee shop to do my work. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Anna: Durham is a mid-sized city that has seen a host of new restaurants and entertainment options in the past few years. The Durham Performing Arts Center and the American Tobacco Historic District, adjacent to the Durham Bulls stadium, are highlights. Although a lot of the social life takes place on or around campus, there are also a number of places to go out and dance or socialize near 9th Street. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Anna: The Duke University undergraduate population numbers about 6,500. Classes ranged in size; I took eight-person seminars and large lecture classes. Most classes in my major were about 40 people, which is quite large for a humanities class. My favorite classes had about 15 people in them. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Anna: My freshman year, I participated in a program called FOCUS, in which you take a set group of classes that concern a particular theme and live in the same dorm with your classmates. We took a field trip down to Wilson, North Carolina to learn about tobacco farming, then on to Wilmington to learn about North Carolinas growing film industry. You have to sit and think about each and every word or achievement. You have to figure out what the hiring manager wants to hear. You have to take the time to review each and every line in order to make sure it presents yourself in the best light possible. By the time you send in the resume, you will likely have spent hours writing, researching, and analyzing each and every detail. So it may be a bit disheartening to learn that, even after all that time spent crafting the best resume you can possibly make, most hiring managers will never see it. Thousands of Resumes, So Little Time These days, employers are frequently overwhelmed with job applications. The internet has made applying for jobs so easy, that a job opening in a big city can receive as many as 1,000 applications or more within 24 hours, and the average job in almost any city receives at least 118 resumes by the time the job is closed. For the average hiring manager â€" many of whom have other tasks to perform â€" that number is absurd. So to make life easier, many use an applicant tracking system, or “ATS.” What is An Applicant Tracking System? An ATS is a database of resumes. As soon as a resume is received, someone cuts and pastes the details of the resume into a form, which adds it to the database. When an employer is ready to start hiring people, they’ll search that database for a key term, and the database will filter through all of the applications and bring up the resumes that have that term in it. Some applicant tracking systems using an automated scoring mechanism, but the process is largely the same. For the company, there are many different benefits for using this type of system: It makes reviewing resumes much faster. It allows you to keep a database of applicants for future jobs. It is less likely to introduce biases. But for the applicant, it can also be problematic. You can create an amazing resume that meets all of the required criteria, but if you are missing just one key detail or keyword, your resume may not ever see the hiring manager’s eyes. How to Beat the ATS The idea that you may spend so much time on a resume only to have it ignored may be disheartening. Luckily, there ways that you can ensure that you show up for any searches, and tricks that you can use to make sure you put yourself in the best position to get a call. These include: Use Every Key Term in a Job Posting â€" Many of the key terms will already be in the job posting. For example, if the company wants someone with “Salesforce CRM Experience” then you should make sure that “Salesforce CRM” is in your resume. Review Competitor Job Ads â€" Do your research as well. Find out what other job descriptions from competitors and those in other states ask for. Not every company puts every qualification on their job advertisements. But if you look at what other job ads for other companies list, you can often find additional information that should be placed on your resume. Use Both Acronyms and Full Titles â€" Always remember that the people that search these databases are human beings. They may search for an acronym, like “ATS” or “CRM” or “BYOB,” or they may search for the full phrase, like “applicant tracking system.” Since you don’t know what they’re searching for, it helps to have both versions in the resume. Use a Professional Summary â€" You have limited space to put information that helps in an applicant tracking system. Skip the space clogging “objective statement” and instead use a professional summary â€" a 5 to 6 sentence paragraph where you can highlight some of your best features, and plug in valuable key terms. Add Numbers â€" Automated ATS can read numbers to determine important information, such as the number of years worked for a company. Make sure you’re using the numerical version of numbers, rather than the typed out version of the number (ie, 5 vs five). Keep it Simple â€" The average ATS is designed to look for specific information. For example, a “Work Experience” section with the job title above each bulleted list. If you do anything fancy, such as changing the title of the Work Experience section to something unique, like “Sarah’s Job History,” or if you add special formatting that isn’t normal for resumes, you may confuse the applicant tracking system and have your resume discarded. Tweak Often â€" Finally, don’t be afraid to make little changes. Consider different keywords and phrases that may be important. Use synonyms whenever possible. Alter your job title to be more in line with what the title would be at the job. Avoid any filler text and unnecessary information. Tweaking often can make sure that even if one ATS doesn’t like your resume, others will. Technology may have made applying for jobs easier, but it also means that job seekers need to take the time to perfect their resume for the positions to which they’re applying. Often that means making sure that your resume is ATS ready. Consider the above tips and strategies to maximize your chance at landing the job, and remember that the time you spend to build the perfect resume is always worth it.
